Susan Wolf Turnbull

Susan Turnbull was elected Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in February 2005. Having worked in numerous campaigns and Democratic Party leadership positions, she is proud to describe herself as a community activist.

A member of the DNC since 1992, Ms. Turnbull has served on the DNC Executive Committee since 1997 and has been on the leadership team of the Women’s Leadership Forum for ten years. From 1997 until her appointment as DNC Deputy Chair in the fall of 2003, Ms. Turnbull was the elected Chair of the DNC Women's Caucus. In 2001 she was named as one of the founding Co-Chairs of the DNC Women's Vote Center and currently serves on its Advisory Committee.

As National Chair of the DNC Women’s Leadership Forum from 2002-2005, Susan was responsible for all activities of that organization which hosted events attended by more than 15,000 women in 15 cities across the country.

Ms. Turnbull is a frequent Democratic Party spokesperson on national cable television and talk radio programs. She appears on FOX News Channel and MSNBC regularly and is often heard on talk radio. Susan was a platform speaker at the 2000 Democratic Convention where she chaired the Women’s Caucus events at the convention, attended by more than 6000 women over the four day convention. In 2004, she was co-organizer of the Convention’s women’s events, which were the largest events at the convention outside the convention hall itself. She has campaigned for the Democratic Party and its candidates at functions in more than 30 states, the District of Columbia, and with Democrats Abroad in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Taipei.

Susan is the only person to have ever been awarded both the Montgomery County Democratic Party Democrat of the Year (2000) and the Maryland Democratic Party Distinguished Service Award (2003). From 1990 -1993 Susan was the elected Vice Chair of the Montgomery County Democratic Party and served as the Party Chair in 1993 -1994.

With a background in Urban Planning and Design, she has worked in a variety of legislative and governmental positions for 30 years. Susan holds a B.S. Magna Cum Laude in Community Services from the University of Cincinnati, a M.S. from the University of Maryland in Urban Studies and a B.A. in Interior Design from the Marymount University.

Currently the principal of an Interior Space Planning business, she is especially proud of her management of the construction and design of the Hillel International Center in Washington, DC, the interior design of the Winnick Center at Syracuse University and the 2003 renovation of Brooklyn College Hillel in New York. Susan also has provided pro bono design services for the Jewish Social Service Agency of Metropolitan Washington for several years.

A community activist, Susan has served on local community, PTA, and charitable boards for over 25 years, including serving for four years as Vice President of the Jewish Social Service Agency, where she is now a life member of the Board of Directors. For more than a decade Susan has been affiliated with the National Jewish Democratic Council.

Susan Turnbull lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with her husband Bruce. They are proud parents of Joshua (25) a non-profit low-income housing administrator in San Francisco, California and David (22) a research assistant at an environmental advocacy organization in Washington, DC.
