Dear AnnaKate,

Our Special Speaker and Topic is
BUILDING A BILLION-DOLLAR BUSINESS, ONE CUSTOMER AT A TIME
with Leslie Blodgett

As a cosmetics "counter girl" in the '80s, Leslie Blodgett recognized something was very wrong with the makeup industry, from the products themselves to the way women were treated. Years later, as CEO of Bare Escentuals, her focus on doing things differently helped transform the fledgling bath & body retailer into a $1 billion dollar cosmetic empire.

With signature frankness and humor, Leslie will share her early struggles to keep her company afloat while balancing work and family, and the challenges and rewards that come with success. She'll describe how her nontraditional approach to just about everything gave the company its competitive edge, and built a vibrant culture and fanatic following in the process.

You'll come away with pragmatic advice that any business owner can apply, whether you're just starting out or scaling a multimillion-dollar business.
About Leslie Blodgett
A visionary recognized by WWD Beauty Inc. in 2014 as one of "The Big 10 leaders in beauty," Leslie Blodgett has earned her influential position as a beauty industry magnate through a 20-year tenure at Bare Escentuals, forever transforming the conversation around beauty by utilizing unconventional marketing tactics, leveraging a diverse distribution model, and spearheading a personal, community-enabled approach.

Blodgett's ability to transform a small-scale Bay Area bath and body retailer into a cosmetic empire has also earned her other noteworthy accolades such as being recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the "Top Entrepreneurs of the Decade: 2000-2009." Charting new territory at the helm of Bare Escentuals, Blodgett has achieved vast success in record time. In 2006, Blodgett took the company public in one of the largest cosmetic IPO's in the last decade. Just four years later, in 2010, Bare Escentuals was acquired by Shiseido, the Japan-based leading cosmetics company, for $1.8 billion making it one of the largest cosmetic
mergers in history.

Now, more than ever, Blodgett is able to fulfill her mission of bringing the company's mineral-based products to even more women worldwide. Bare Escentuals is currently available in 32 countries, with over 6,500 points of distribution, including more than 200 company-owned boutiques.

In October 2013, Blodgett was recognized for her accomplishments by Fashion Group International (FGI) at their annual Night of Stars and received the Star Honoree Award for Beauty. In 2012, Blodgett addressed Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) graduates, her alma mater, and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. In 2011, Blodgett joined the board of directors at Stella & Dot, the San Bruno-based accessories company that ranked 67 on the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies in 2010. Blodgett also serves on the board of Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) and was the the first recipient of the organization's Achiever Award in 2006 for her contributions to the industry.
