Monday, July 21, 2014
This month we have some great materials to share on helping parents talk to their kids about using technology safely — something we care deeply about at AT&T. These two new offerings, one created through a joint effort by ConnectSafely, AT&T and others in our industry, and another by iKeepSafe and AT&T, are great tools for helping keep people safe online.

AT&T recently released the “Parents’ Guide to Mobile Phones” by ConnectSafely, a joint effort by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and CTIA. The guide gives parents powerful toolsdesigned to help them ensure their families are using cellphones in a manner that protects their safety, privacy and security.
With three-quarters (75 percent) of U.S. teens and an increasing number of younger children using mobile phones, the guide tackles pertinent issues facing many families. By highlighting the benefits of using mobile phones, as well as identifying important risks and how to minimize them, a “Parents’ Guide to Mobile Phones” provides families with a comprehensive understanding of today’s mobile ecosystem.
This guide (available inEnglishandSpanish) explores top concerns from parents, including how to determine the best age for a child to have a cellphone; how to best employ parental controls; how to help protect their child’s privacy; and how to better control the cost of their child’s cellphone services and apps. Also included in the guide are a user-friendly cellphone safety checklist and smartphone tips for individuals of all ages.
Andrea Brands, AT&T’s director of Consumer Safety and Education, says the“Parents' Guide to Mobile Phones” represents AT&T’s continued commitment to online and mobile safety initiatives that focus on educating and empowering consumers to protect themselves, use technology responsibly and maintain a positive digital reputation.”
An Online Safety App to Guide your Family Through the Summer
School is out and summer has officially arrived. While we’ll be enjoying warmer weather and longer days, students on summer vacation will likely stay occupied by spending more time online. This means it is particularly important for parents to understand how to teach youth about how to stay safe online.
Summer is the perfect time to start a conversation with your family about online safety, using thenew Spanish-language versionof theBEaPROTMParent app.
By offering the app in a second language,we’ll be able to empower and educate an even greater number of parents on how to help their kids stay safe across all connected devices.
When it comes to maintaining your family’s safety both offline and online, parents and guardians (often grandparents) can be the best resources. However, understanding online safety and what the potential risks are can be a daunting task.
That’s why, in October, AT&T and iKeepSafe partnered to release theBEaPROTMParent app,an online safety tool, to help you learn what you need to know and where to look for the answers to your most pressing questions.
The app determines where gaps in healthy digital citizenship behavior and attitude exist in your specific household. The app then offers tailored advice and resources that provide you with best practices for teaching your kids about online safety. The BEaPROTMParent app is available on Android devices, so you can easily access it at all times through your mobile phone.
