First Time in History: 100 Women in Congress

Democrat Alma Adams made history after Tuesday's special election by becoming the 100th woman in Congress. The special election means Adams can be sworn in immediately to replace Mel Watt rather than waiting until January.

Mel Watt was chosen to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) as the new director, leaving his seat in North Carolina's 12th Congressional District open.

Adams will represent the central North Carolina areas of Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Lexington, Concord, High Point, and Salisbury.

Although the historical number may change in January when the rest of the newly elected members are sworn in, this is a major milestone that speaks volumes regarding women's progress as it was less than 100 years ago that women gained the right to vote.
