A Message from the President . . .

Dear AnnaKate,

It's an exciting time here at the NAWBO - San Francisco Bay Area chapter. We are mixing it up, trying some new programs and events, making new partnerships, and responding to what we hear from you about the topics important to women business owners.

Last month, in lieu of our regular dinner event, we hosted a Half-Day Workshop "Women, Business and Money: How to Get It, Keep It and Grow It," which was a great success. It was wonderful to see some new faces, and I want to especially thank our sponsor, Wells Fargo for all their support!

Guest Column: Anne O'Neill

Last weekend, the power went out in my Oakland neighborhood on Sunday evening. The blinkingtraffic lights and darkened businessesalong College Avenue in Rockridge were aninstant reminder of how we take our infrastructure for granted. As I drove home, I was thinking about the email I needed to catch up on and wondering how quickly my home network would be back online - glad that I could use my mobile phone for a temporary hotspot.

Interruptions in our service provider network, and on our own communication devices can cause major disruption to our ability to get work done and serve customers. And, with 71% of small business owners citing the computer as their most important piece of equipment in the office and roughly 33% of American small business owners that use mobile technology to run their businesses in some capacity - our reliance on technology as a critical means of communicating and conducting business is greater than ever. Hackers know even a simple disruption or theft of data can have a large impact on a small business making them increasingly attractive targets.

Don't let a cyber criminal interrupt your business or endanger your and your clients' data.

Take the time to protect the technology that is so important to communication and productivity. When shopping for mobile technology - make sure that your service provider offers safeguards such as strong identity management systems, data and voice encryption and anti-virus software.

October was National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The Department of Homeland Security has created a website with more information and tips about security for small businesses.

Business News You Can Use . . .

It is important for women-owned businesses and firms to be able to export their products. Why? |Learn More

Public Policy . . .

The CA Legislative session has ended for the year. This is a time to review how small business fared in light of the upcoming elections.

The Governor vetoed SB 610 Franchisee protection and AB 1399 New Markets Tax Credit.A Crowd Funding Bill 2096 bill was stopped in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

SB 610 and AB 2096 may be reintroduced. If you care about franchises and crowd funding familiarize yourself with these bills. Small Business California is considering legislation that would require state agencies to notify businesses when licenses are up for renewal. Does this matter to you? What changes would you like to see in CA?

It is important that we become involved.Vote for candidates that support small businesses.Contact you legislators at the beginning of the year. Introduce yourself.Tell them about NAWBO and your business.Let them know you care and what you care about. They want to know.

There are a number of local initiatives that affect your city and county. We do not report on those here are there are too many to mention.

May Pon, as a SF business owner, does represent NAWBO SFBA with Mayor Lee's Small Business Roundtable and other SF advisory councils related to small businesses, i.e. Business Tax Advisory Group.Contact May maypon@bbatax.com if you have concerns in SF so that she can represent interests of our members.

It may be important to become involved locally as they make decisions regarding minimum wage, sales taxes and more. If you become involved let me know the issues you are addressing.

We will post a list of state and federal legislators on our website after the elections are completed.Call them.It is important.

Mark your calendars for NAWBO CA Propel Your Business annual conference. This is a great time to meet your legislators.April 26-28, 2014.
