What Happens to Fast Track Trade Bill?


In an attempt to torpedo the fast track trade authority passed by the Senate earlier this month, House Democrats voted against the bill, bringing trade talks to a halt.  “Fast track” means that Congress has to vote either up or down on trade deals--they cannot be amended.  Until the House reconsiders the bill, trade negotiations for two trade deals with the European Union and Pacific Rim nations have ground to a halt.  Claiming fast track authority thwarts Congressional input, opposing Democrats in the House believe trade deals are harmful to American industry and its workforce.  Many experts believe that without this expedited authority, both trade deals now on the table will die in Congress.
