Congress Dedicates More Money to Programs Supporting Women Entrepreneurs

In a big win for women entrepreneurs, the House Appropriations Committee voted to increase funding to both Women’s Business Centers and the Microloan Program, where women make up the majority of loan recipients. These two programs were top priorities in WIPP’s annual funding request to Congress.  Women’s Business Centers offer training and business expertise.  One out of four centers offers microloans (under $50,000).

Under the bill, Women’s Business Centers would receive an additional $2 million, raising total Center funding to $17 million. Microloan lending would be increased to $35 million while the associated counseling services would receive $25 million. The victory was especially significant given cuts to non-defense funding overall.

The bill will now head to the House floor for a vote. The Senate version has not yet been released. Read more on the bill here.
