FY16 Funding to Support Women Entrepreneurs Stalls Over Flag Controversy

The House FY16 Financial Services & General Government Appropriations bill, which included a big win for women entrepreneurs, has stalled over a debate of Confederate flags on federal property. The issue has stopped all funding bills from moving forward. The House was expected to next consider increased funding to both Women’s Business Centers and the Microloan Program, where women make up the majority of loan recipients. These two

programs were top priorities in WIPP’s annual funding request to Congress.

Under the bill, Women’s Business Centers would receive an additional $2 million, raising total Center funding to $17 million. Microloan lending would be increased to $35 million while the associated counseling services would receive $25 million.

A vote on the bill may not happen until after the August recess. The Senate version has not yet been released. Read more on the bill here.
