FY16 Funding to Support Women Entrepreneurs Waits for Fall

The House FY16 Financial Services & General Government Appropriations bill, which included a big win for women entrepreneurs, will wait until Congress returns in September for consideration. The House hoped to consider legislation that would increase funding to both Women’s Business Centers and the Microloan Program, where women make up the majority of loan recipients, prior to leaving but instead will address in the fall. These two programs were top priorities in WIPP’s annual funding request to Congress.

Under the bill, Women’s Business Centers (WBCs) would receive an additional $2 million, raising total Center funding to $17 million. Microloan lending would be increased to $35 million while the associated counseling services would receive $25 million. Read more on the bill here. The Senate version of the bill would keep WBC funding at $15 million, but match the increases in microloan funding. Currently, Democrats oppose all funding bills, citing cuts too deep to non-defense programming.
