Highway Funding Secured Until November
The Highway Trust Fund, responsible for infrastructure projects nationwide, was set to run out at the end of the month. The House and Senate both passed an $8 billion short-term highway funding bill, which will buy Congress through the end of the year to come up with long term funding.
The Senate, however, also passed a bipartisan a long term fix. The bill authorizes infrastructure projects for six years, but only funds them for three. Legislators will have to come back to this issue in three years to find the additional funding. For the first three years, the bill uses about $45 billion in revenue increases and makes spending cuts in other places to fund the Highway Trust Fund. The House will take up long term highway funding when they return in the fall.
