Adding a Seat to the FAR Council Floated

Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) announced his intention to further explore adding a small business seat to the Federal Acquisition Regulatory (FAR) Council.  The FAR Council, an important federal procurement body, coordinates government-wide procurement policy and adopts changes made to acquisition policy through agency rulemaking.  WIPP testified earlier this year that adding the Small Business Administration (SBA) to the FAR Council, which consists of DOD, GSA and NASA, would strengthen the participation by small businesses in federal procurement decision-making.  During an October 7th Senate Small Business Committee session, Cardin raised the issue and urged other Members to consider its merit.

Despite the lively and mostly positive discussion, Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) noted that the addition of SBA to the Council should be vetted by other agencies. Cardin did not indicate a timetable for any further action by the Committee on this issue.
