Cybersecurity Sharing Legislation Nearly Complete

Amid the wave of hacking stories from companies big and small, Congress is working on legislation to address issues related to cybersecurity. Most recently, that includes a bill to allow companies to volunteer cyber incident data to the government in return for protections from lawsuits. Simply put, companies would be encouraged to share their network data with each other and the government in exchange for legal protections for cyber attacks and privacy issues. The bill, S. 754, has bipartisan support, but has raised concern among privacy advocates. It is expected to pass early next week when the Senate returns.

The bill is one of many government actions related to the larger threat of cyber attacks. Federal contractors should be aware of an increased pressure to require both prime and subcontractors to demonstrate network security.

Often, small firms do not have the resources or personnel to manage complex cyber threats. The Small Business Administration (SBA) has tools and resources available for business owners and IT staff.
