Action Alert - Open Network Concerns

There are many requests out now urging small business owners to sign on to a letter to their congressman calling for open Internet conditions on the broadband money in the economic stimulus package.

WIPP has done a lot of research and work in the telecommunications area. We do not believe an open network with little or no network management is the right strategy. Already high usage of video downloads has slowed down the networks and has impaired traffic flow for many businesses and consumers. Providers must be allowed to manage the traffic flow so that small business owners do not experience delays or impaired processing. We have written about it on a number of occasions – the latest on May 21st (See WIPP blog below - Free and Open?  I don’t think so!).

Our position at this time is to advocate for more provider choice with properly managed networks resulting in higher speeds, better reliability and security, and lower prices.

With a network not properly managed, it will soon be very difficult for a small business owner to use the technology to manage and grow their business because they will be competing with continuous video streaming and clogged networks.  We must be able to select the right product for our business needs from a provider that will provide the best speed, security, reliability and value. For sure, that is not either a highly regulated internet, nor an internet that is totally free and open and not managed properly.

Allowing the providers to manage their networks and meet consumer and business needs is the best strategy in the long run.

Before you sign up to support a fully open internet, you need to understand the issue and the ramifications. We will be keeping you informed of on-going developments.

WIPP Blog:

Free and Open? I don't think so!

Chatter is beginning to heat up on the push for an open internet. It sounds good - no question about it. Small businesses definitely need more choice, higher speeds and lower prices, no doubt about that. However the focus must first be on building high speed networks and managing them properly so that we can access them.

With a network not properly managed, it will soon be very difficult for a small business owner to use the technology to manage and grow their business because they will be competing with continuous video streaming and clogged networks. I don't want that to happen - what I want is to be able to select the right product for my business needs from a provider that will provide me the best speed, security, reliability and value.
