Defense Bill Passes House, Introduced in Senate

WIPP’s government relations team is reviewing the 1200-page defense bill passed by the House (H.R. 4909) and the companion (but slightly different) Senate version (S. 2943) in a busy week for Congress.

While WIPP awaits the final bill text from the House and the accompanying report in the Senate, women business owners should be optimistic that this defense bill will be the vehicle for important changes. In the House, a whole section of the bill is devoted to small business contracting changes and strengthening resources for women entrepreneurs including women’s business centers.

As WIPP celebrated earlier, the House approved significant upgrades to Women’s Business Center program.  It would raise the funding authorization level by 50% from $14.5M to $21.75M. Individual centers win too with grant levels increased to $185,000 (up from $150,000) and additional awards – up to $65,000 per year – available.

As the House and Senate details are released, look for WIPP’s analysis of what it will mean for your business.
