Get The Facts: Changes to Overtime Pay

Department of Labor rules finalized on May 18th will make an estimated 4.2 million new workers eligible for overtime pay. Salaried, executive administrative and professional workers, making under $47,476 annually, will get time-and-a-half payments for work over 40 hours in a week.  The rule goes into effect December 1, 2016. Facts about the change are available on WIPP’s Women In Biz blog.

The announcement completes a process that began in 2015. WIPP raised concerns about the proposed change in a comment to the Department of Labor (DOL) last fall.  WIPP advocated for an exemption for small businesses and expressed our worry that workers would lose the flexible work arrangements they enjoy due to increased schedule tracking and compliance. The DOL recognized these concerns, but did not substantially alter their final plan to address them.

For more information, the DOL has a website devoted to the new rule.
