WIPP Instant Impact Teams Meet with over 40 Senate and Congressional Offices during the 2009 WIPP National Legislative Meeting in Washington, DC
16 Instant Impact Teams met with over 40 Senate and Congressional offices to directly engage with legislative officials and staff representatives on various policy issues during Women Impacting Public Policy’s annual National Legislative Meeting on October 1, 2009 in Washington, DC. The meeting featured guest speakers including Senator Mary Landrieu, Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee (D-LA); Senator Jean Shaheen (D-NH); Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK); Administrator Karen Mills, U.S. Small Business Administration and Neera Tanden, Senior Advisor, Health Care Policy, the White House.
The Nationwide Instant Impact Team Program was launched by WIPP in 2007, with the original goal of engaging members in their local areas to become actively involved with their elected officials. Since 2007, these teams have solidified working relationships with Federal and State officials’ district offices, thereby sending a strong message to Washington, DC that WIPP is the voice for women business owners on Capitol Hill. Through WIPP, our collective voice makes a powerful impact on Capitol Hill and with the Administration.
Across the board, WIPP Instant Impact Teams reported successful meetings. Members were able to communicate how important policy issues such as healthcare, environment, energy and retirement, directly impacted them as small business owners. Specific success stories included the Senior Economic Advisor from Senator Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) office asking members for their thoughts on the SBA and Access to Capital for a position paper he was currently working on; and a meeting with Congressman Jerry Moran (R-KS) discussing healthcare reform that resulted in specific notes to evaluate issues raised by members from the perspective of a small business owner.
