New Federal Contractor Reporting Requirement
 
The FAR Council (authors of the government contracting rulebook) released a new requirement for contractors to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions. All federal contractors that earned $7.5 million or more on government contracts in the previous fiscal year will be required to state if, and where, they publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, and any greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. The rule seeks to “enable the federal government to better understand the greenhouse gas management practices of its industry partners”.
 
Contractors earning less than $7.5 million from federal contracts may voluntarily submit information, but will not be required to do so. The rule also made clear that companies will not be judged on greenhouse gas disclosures, which will not be used in contracting decisions. Companies are only requested to provide publicly available information.
