President Signs Executive Order to Improve Regulatory Review

Thursday, January 20, 2011

President Obama on Tuesday ordered a government-wide review of federal regulations in an effort to improve or repeal outdated, burdensome, and inefficient rules that hinder private sector job growth. The President said that the Executive Order would prompt "a government-wide review of the rules already on the books, to remove outdated regulations that stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive."

In addition to reviewing existing regulations, the Administration also called for a new set of guidelines for drafting, reviewing, and the implementation of new rules. When proposing future regulations, agencies will first be required to determine whether the benefits justify the potential costs posed to businesses and whether they impose the least possible burden on the economy at large.
