Top Ten Facts about Women Business Owners

(According to the WIPP 2008 Annual Survey)


1. Despite gloomy economic forecasts, 49% women business owners are optimistic about their growth and plan to add up to 5 employees in 2008; 67% expect revenues to increase.


2. Although offering health care insurance is costly and rising, 65% women business owners offer health insurance to their employees.  However, 46% feel that responsibility for insurance coverage should be assumed by individuals, rather than employers.


3. 72% propose that Congress reduce the federal budget deficit by reducing spending,


4. Nearly two-thirds believe global warming and changes to the environment will affect them professionally and personally. 75% report are impacted by rising energy costs; 64% have introduced “green” practices into their business operations; and 1/3 have engaged in technology initiatives/business services and products to improve energy efficiency.


5. 66% of WOBs do not believe that the women’s procurement program as proposed by the SBA will help federal agencies achieve the woman owned government contracting goal of 5%.


6. Demographically, 36% of WIPP members are minority owners.  20% of WIPP members are between the ages of 36 and 45; 41% have more than 11 employees; 71% have owned their businesses more than 5 years; and 7% have yearly revenues over $20M.


7. 94% women business owners cite broadband access as critical to their operation and use the connection to access their main office, home office, and remote locations.  66% called for permanent extension of the Internet Tax Moratorium.


8. 50% believe that the tax code should be reformed to be equitable to all businesses whether they are organized as C-Corps, S- Corps, LLCs or self employed.   40% are organized as S-Corp, and 18% as C-Corp.


9. 60% continue to seek outside funding to fuel business growth and two-thirds support tax incentives for private investors wishing to invest in small businesses.


10. 79% believe that reform of the Social Security system is an issue to be addressed by the incoming Administration and Congress, and 50% want to manage a portion of their Social Security fund.
