PG&E believes in education and the power that it has in strengthening our communities. Education is one of our main community priorities—in addition to economic and community vitality, environmental stewardship, and volunteerism. That's why we're again awarding $1 million in scholarships this spring through the PG&E Bright Minds™ Scholarship program to high-achieving, low-income students.

The scholarship application period is now open and the deadline to apply is Thursday, February 28. Go to to learn more. Winners will receive full-ride college scholarships of up to $30,000 per year and finalists will receive one-time awards of $2,500.

This scholarship program is unique because awards will not be given solely based on academics and financial need, but also on community leadership or demonstrated personal triumph over significant obstacles in pursuit of education. Beginning this year, as a way to help serve future company needs, the program will place a special emphasis on students studying engineering. However, this does not preclude other majors from being considered.

Last year's inaugural program was a huge success: 10 students from throughout our service area won $30,000 renewable scholarships as part of our inaugural Bright Minds™ Scholarship Program. Winners were told during surprise announcements at their schools or at PG&E locations; reporters and family members were also on hand to congratulate students. Another 90 students won one-time $2,500 scholarships. Click here to see PG&E surprising one of last year's recipients with a full-ride scholarship. We will also be working with last year's scholarship recipients to try and match them with PG&E internships.

The Bright Minds™ Scholarship Program is in addition to the Employee Resource Group (ERG) scholarship programs, which have provided more than $2.5 million to hundreds of recipients throughout northern and central California since 1989. In 2012, ERGs awarded $302,000 in scholarships to 163 deserving students. The awards set a new record, surpassing the prior year's $289,000 in scholarships. The deadline to apply for ERG scholarships is February 1. Click here for more information.

Please help spread the word about our new scholarship program and encourage students you know to visit to learn more and apply. Thank you for your ongoing support of our communities.
