Communications and Policy Update

Well that was fast… Since the last update, Congress got back to Washington, worked for eight days and then left again for campaign season until after Veterans Day.

In that very short amount of time Congress did extend ITFA, which is good in that the original November 1st moratorium expiration was moved - though the extension to December 11th wasn’t the exactly what  we desired.

Now that we are entering into campaign season, we have a great opportunity for collective grassroots/media commentary, engagement and outreach on getting a permanent extension of ITFA completed. Specifically, a good opportunity for in-state activities/op-eds – as well as nationally.

Your ongoing help in spreading the word on extending ITFA permanently is crucial. I thank you for your efforts ahead of time.

Just last week we released the findings of our 2014 Hispanic Consumer Survey (Blog on the results below). A lot of great results from this survey that point to the value of wireless technology and why these devices and services shouldn’t be taxed as heavily as they are. I’ve attached the “top stats” one pager to this email as well – spread the word!

Be on the lookout for the 2014 Wireless Tax Rankings report by Scott Mackey of KSE Partners and the Tax Foundation. It is slated to be released within the next week. Another great resource to point to for commentary on disproportionally high and regressive wireless taxes and fees and the need for tax reforms on not just wireless service but Internet access as well.

ITFA highlights:

  • On 9/30 Forbes published “Gleckman Clueless -- Internet Tax Moratorium Matters” by CCAGW President Tom Schatz
  • On 9/29 the Congressional Internet Caucus hosted the panel event, “The Expiration of the Internet Tax Moratorium: What New Internet & Mobile Phone Taxes Will Mean For Constituents & For The Economy” featuring Scott Mackey of KSE Partners, Katie McAuliffe of ATR and Nicol Turner Lee of MMTC
  • On 9/17, Minority organizations coalition letter to Senate Leadership
  • On 9/17, Roll Call published “Keep the Internet Free of Taxes” by John Sununu and Harold Ford Jr.
  • On 9/12,  InTheCapital published Consumer Action’s “Why Consumers and Businesses Need Permanent Freedom From Internet Taxes.”
  •  On 9/10, the Bellingham Herald published “It’s time to modernize rules on e-commerce.”
  • On 9/9, the ITFA Coalition released a press release calling for immediate action on ITFA.
  • On 9/9, the Broadband for America Honorary Co-Chairmen John Sununu and Harold Ford, Jr. issued a statement in support of ITFA.
    • Both the ITFA Coalition and BFA statements were picked up by TR Daily, the Hill and USA Tax News.
