House to Obama: A Workweek is 40 Hours, Not 30

In their first week back, House Republicans moved quickly to pass a bipartisan healthcare reform. The Save American Workers Act of 2015 (H.R. 30) would generally change the definition of full-time worker to an employee working a minimum of 40 hours per week. Currently, the Affordable Care Act or “Obamacare” defines full-time workers as those working 30 or more hours per week. A dozen Democrats joined in support of the legislation.

The bill is the first of three changes Republicans in the House would like to see.  one of many “Obamacare fixes” the new Republican-controlled Congress hopes to pass. Other changes include allowing small businesses more flexibility in reimbursing employee healthcare costs, and increasing the availability of tax credits for small businesses and the self-employed.

The bill’s passage marks a legislative achievement for WIPP, which supported the legislation, both now and in previous Congresses. In the Senate, where moderate Democrats are supportive, the timeline for considering the legislation is unclear. The White House, however, opposes the bill and threatened a veto.
