Money Matters: FY2016 Gets Under Way

Yes, that’s right, Money Matters is back already. Now that the President has submitted his FY2016 Budget request to the Congress, the budget and appropriations processes are officially underway.

In the coming weeks, both the House and Senate Budget Committees will review the President’s request and draft Budget resolutions that will serve as roadmaps for Congressional Appropriators. Budget resolutions are non-binding, which means they do not carry to force of law, but nonetheless receive attention because they outline the majority party’s priorities and set broad parameters for the Appropriations Committees.

For the first time during President Obama’s presidency, both Houses of Congress are in the hands of Republicans, which means that Budget Committee Chairs Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) are likely to work together to craft similar resolutions. For example, they will give clues as to whether or not Congress is interested in increased federal spending, removing sequester spending caps, and taking on tax reform – all of which were included in the President’s Budget request.

Both Chairs must submit their resolutions for a vote by April 15, 2015. When that occurs, the Appropriators take over, and will begin hearings on FY2016 funding for individual agencies. Stay tuned to Money Matters for weekly updates on FY2016 budget and appropriations.  FY2016 will run from October 1, 2015-September 30, 2016.
