Statement on the Passage of The Women’s Small Business Ownership Act (S.2126)

Last year, WIPP brought its members to attend and participate in a hearing on women’s entrepreneurship, held by the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee.  Three areas of opportunity for women entrepreneurs emerged:  access to capital, access to federal markets and access to improved training and counseling.

In 2014, WIPP’s number one priority – sole source authority for the women’s procurement program was realized.  Now, the second piece of this puzzle, reauthorizing the Women’s Business Center (WBC) program is moving in the Senate.  We are grateful to Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chair David Vitter (R-LA) and Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) for sponsoring this landmark legislation.  We thank all the Senators on the Committee for passing this bill out of Committee on a bipartisan, unanimous vote on October 8.

Women’s Business Centers provide an invaluable resource for the 10 million women entrepreneurs in the country who contribute to the nation’s economy by generating $1.6 trillion.  They employ nearly 9 million people, generating jobs and wealth for communities.  It is through the information, opportunities and connections provided by WBCs that WIPP members can grow and thrive.  WIPP members urge immediate Senate action.
