WIPP Works Every Day To Champion Women in Business – Join Our Efforts!

by Kristie Arslan, WIPP Executive Director

As a business owner, your time and energy is best spent running and growing your business.  However, you know the negative or positive impact that a new regulation, a tax increase or deduction, and a government program can have on your bottom line. Monitoring what is going on in our nation’s capital can be confusing and time consuming. Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) can help you stay up-to-date on the issues affecting women business owners and take action to address the challenges you face.

WIPP works every day in Washington advocating for women business owners, like you, with Congress and the Administration. We need you to add your voice to our efforts!

WIPP Members know the value of being part of an organization, like WIPP, that provides them the information and tools they need to be successful, as well as a seat at the table among policymakers.  This month we will be celebrating the federal government’s achievement of awarding 5% of its annual federal contracts to women-owned small businesses for the first time since the goal was set more than twenty years ago.  WIPP’s members, coalition partners and sponsors have played a critical role in this accomplishment.

WIPP and our corporate partner, American Express OPEN, are longtime champions of women entrepreneurs in the federal contracting space. Together we created the Give Me 5 program in 2008 to give women-owned small businesses access to knowledge and resources to help win federal contracts. At the time, just 3.4% of federal contracts were awarded to women-owned small businesses—roughly $13 billion of the approximately $400 billion awarded annually.

In April 2013, WIPP, American Express OPEN and the Small Business Administration (SBA) launched ChallengeHER, a national initiative to boost government contracting opportunities for women-owned small businesses. ChallengeHER delivers free workshops, mentoring and direct access to government buyers. Now entering its fourth year, ChallengeHER has educated more than 5,400 women entrepreneurs at 39 workshops across the country and facilitated more than 1,900 meetings between women small business owners and government officials.

In the past four years, WIPP has built a coalition of organizations and successfully advocated for changes to the Women-Owned Small Business Procurement Program that has resulted in improvements to the program such as removing caps on contracts and providing sole source authority.  In a time when Congress was taking little action, WIPP was able to remove these roadblocks in the way of women in business accessing markets and growing their business.

This is only a beginning…WIPP needs your help to continue our fight to create an economic and regulatory climate that helps women business owners prosper.  If you are a WIPP member, we ask that you spread the word about WIPP and encourage other women in business to become part of our community.

If you are not a member, join WIPP today to make your voice heard on the issues impacting you and your business!
