The men and women that serve in America's military come from all walks of life. For many returning veterans, nothing is more important than a good job at a company with an opportunity to advance and build a career. That's exactly what Walmart has been offering veterans since we launched our Veterans Welcome Home Commitment on Memorial Day 2013 and expanded it in 2015 to hire 250,000 veterans by 2020.

By way of celebrating the third anniversary of this commitment,we were delighted to announce that we have hired 130,828 veteranssince it began --- with 15,176 of them already promoted to jobs with higher pay and greater responsibility. At the same time, the Walmart Foundation announced $2.6 million in new grants to two non-profit organizations (American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program and Swords Into Plowshares)dedicated to supporting military personnel transitioning to civilian life..

This is not only a substantive way of thanking veterans for their service; it's a way for us to tap into the leadership experience, strong work ethic and technical skills that make veterans a great addition to the Walmart family.

We're rewarded with people like former Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Patrick Shannon, who started building a career with Walmart after eight years in "The Corps". Today he is a fresh produce operations manager at a Walmart store in Indianapolis. He appreciates the support Walmart gave him and now he's mentoring other veterans.

Associates such as Patrick are a powerful reminder of why we think hiring veterans is good for Walmart and good for America.
