WIPP Member Angela Dingle Testifies Before Congress on Small Business Cybersecurity Challenges

The House Small Business Committee held a hearing yesterday focused on a priority for female entrepreneurs- the increasing danger of cyber threats and their impact on the small business community. Angela Dingle, Chair of WIPP’s Education Foundation, used her expertise as the owner of a business that provides cyber security, governance, and risk management services to government agencies to testify before the Committee.

The outcome of a cyber attack can be disastrous for small business owners, as many firms are unable to recover from the the loss of resources or intellectual property. In particular, Angela’s testimony focused on businesses that work with the federal government and new Department of Defense cybersecurity regulations on federal contractors.

WIPP is particularly concerned about the significant cost associated with these requirements and their potential to push women-owned firms out of the federal marketplace – only months after reaching the 5% goal for the first time.

Ms. Dingle also recommended a few things a proactive small business owner can do, including:

  • Understanding the scope and impact of changes on the business.
  • Aligning organizational policies, practices and procedures to comply.
  • Empowering those with the technical expertise necessary to implement changes.
  • Providing adequate training to ensure employees are aware of their responsibilities, and
  • Holding individuals accountable for compliance.

Implementing effective processes can help small businesses manage information security risk, increase stakeholder confidence, and reduce the costs associated with compliance.

The Committee looked into these and other cybersecurity challenges facing small businesses. The hearing can be found in full here.
