Walmart Chilean Earthquake Relief Efforts

In light of Saturday's tragic earthquake in Chile, we wanted to share with you what our company has done to bring much-needed relief to the region. Because Walmart employs 34,000 associates at 255 D&S stores throughout the country, this devastating earthquake hit particularly close to home-- impacting our own communities, customers, associates and suppliers. That's why we've made an initial commitment of $1 million in cash and in-kind assistance for relief efforts, and it's why our team in Chile is actively engaged in providing assistance on the ground.

We are still working to assess the impact on our operations and associates. To date, 95 percent of our retail operations in Chile are currently up and running. Also, the majority of our stores in Chile have designated associates to provide assistance for other associates requesting basic necessities or other forms of support. In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue to monitor the situation and look for additional ways to help, in partnership with the Chilean government.

This is the second time in just eight weeks that we have been able to leverage our strengths as a business and our global network of suppliers, associates, customers and partners to bring relief to areas that have faced devastating earthquakes. Following the January earthquake in Haiti, our company donated more than $1 million in cash and in-kind contributions, such as pre-packaged food kits, blankets and face masks. We also worked with our associates and customers to raise an additional $3 million in direct financial support.

Giving back to our communities, especially in a time of need, is part of our culture at Walmart. In the aftermath of any disaster, basic needs become paramount. We are honored to be able to do our part in providing life-sustaining items and much-needed peace of mind to those in need during natural disasters. Our thoughts are with the individuals and communities who have been affected by the earthquakes in both Chile and Haiti. We will continue toassess the damage and the needs of our customers and associates, and support relief efforts in any way that we can.

If you have any thoughts or questions about these efforts, we encourage you to contact us.
