More Women Business Owners in Non-Traditional Industries Seek Certification

Lake Park, FLA (November 2010) --- Women in non-traditional industries, such as construction, transportation and real estate, are the leaders in seeking certification as a national Woman Business Enterprise (WBE), according to the National Women Business Owners Corporation (NWBOC).

Janet Harris-Lange, NWBOC President, said certification applications from non-traditional business industries for women have passed the number of applications from women in more traditional industries. "We used to certify more companies engaged in employment services, consulting services, commercial decorating, etc. Now we are getting applications from businesses like underground utilities contractor, steel fabrication, tool companies, engineering, architectural, and real estate appraisal companies—quite different from years before.”

Harris-Lange said the increase in certification requests are not just because more women are starting businesses in non-traditional industries, but also because "they want extra levels of validity and credentials, besides just their business licenses. They're being asked for certification before they can move forward.”

NWBOC, the first national certifier of women business enterprises, was created in response to needs identified by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). The investigation revealed that to a large degree, corporate America and government agencies had not received, nor recognized, the benefits of contracting with women suppliers.

The WBE application and process was developed through the cooperation and input of more than 700 public and private sector individuals.

NWBOC was established in 1995 for the purpose of increasing competition for corporate and government contracts through implementation of a pioneering economic development strategy for women business owners. NWBOC is a national 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and is the first third party, national certifier providing WBE Certification.
