Weekly Women's Update

Welcome to the Council on Women and Girls Weekly Highlights. Women’s History Month is in full swing! This week the Administration celebrated the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day and honored remarkable women and girls at home and around the world. In addition, the President, First Lady, and members of the Administration participated in an important conference on bullying. We also featured an amazing woman in the Administration, Tammy Duckworth, Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Please read below about her story and these incredible events. President Obama & the First Lady at the White House Conference on Bullying Protection
On Thursday, the President led the first ever White House Conference on Bullying Prevention. Here, he talks about how discussing bullying prevention will help those who want to break the unfortunate tradition of bullying and help those who have been bullied realize that they’re not strange or alone. The White House Celebrates International Women’s Day:

Launching the Women in America Data Report
 On March 4th, the Center for American Progress and the White House Council on Women and Girls held an event with administration officials and policy experts to discuss the new White House report, "Women in America, Indicators of Social and Economic Well-Being."

Advise the Advisor: Melody Barnes and Education
In the third edition of the Advise the Advisor program, Melody Barnes, Director of the Domestic Policy Council and one of President Obama’s senior advisors on education policy, is asking for feedback from parents, teachers and students on what’s working in communities and what needs to change.

Meet the Women of the Administration: Tammy Duckworth

One of the goals of the Council on Women and Girls is to highlight the inspirational women working in the Federal Government, and to learn more about their paths to their current positions as public servants. In this series, Meet the Women of the Administration, we asked Assistant Secretary Tammy Duckworth to reflect on how she developed an interest and expertise in government affairs and public service and to weigh in on how she balances work and family.

Gender Equality in Our Nation’s Armed Forces
On March 4th the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) met to discuss the Administration’s goals of achieving gender equality for individuals who serve in our Nation’s Armed Forces.

National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: What Can You Do? Take Action!
Today is the sixth annual National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a nationwide initiative coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH) to make more people aware of the increasing impact that this deadly epidemic is having on women and girls in the United States.
